Traditional Korean paper, known as hanji, is set to be inscribed on UNESCO's Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
The evaluation body of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on Wednesday (local time) recommended that South Korea's nomination, titled "Traditional knowledge and skills associated with the production of hanji and related cultural practices in the Republic of Korea," be inscribed on the list.
Hanji is traditionally made from the inner bark of paper mulberry trees, along with natural plant-based ingredients. The paper is known for its softness and durability and has been used for centuries in Korea for writing, painting, calligraphy and various aspects of everyday life, including traditional house interiors and ceremonial objects.
The final decision on inscription is expected to be made at the committee's 21st session in 2026.
